Titans Seek Playmaker at Defensive End

Posted by Gary Glenn on February 27, 2012 – 4:33 pm

The Titans would like to find another playmaker to pair with defensive end Derrick Morgan, the team's first-round draft pick in 2010.

There is little doubt the Titans will look towards free agency and the NFL Draft to strengthen their defensive line, and it’s a good year to do it, says Titans GM Ruston Webster.

“I think it’s a really good crop. Defensive line in general, I think is good,” Webster said. “Typically, those guys are going to be in the first round because everybody needs them. They’re rare birds. Outside of quarterback, the one position that’s the toughest to build, and the one position where you have to be really strong in order to win consistently, is up front on the defensive line and the offensive line.”

The Titans could use the help. They struck gold on defensive tackles Jurrell Casey and Karl Klug in last year’s draft, but are thin at defensive end with William Hayes, Jason Jones and Dave Ball set to become free agents.

“It’s definitely a need,” head coach Mike Munchak said. “Derrick Morgan is really the only guy playing a lot who is under contract, so that’s definitely an area we’re going to have to look at from both ends — in free agency and the draft. And when the smoke clears, we’ll have some good defensive ends. It’s a matter of where they’re going to come from.”

Munchak would like to possess a combination of veteran leadership and young talent at defensive end. Webster covets a playmaker, similar to what the Titans had in Jevon Kearse back in 1999.

“He changed things,” Webster said of Kearse. “When I was in Tampa, we had Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp. They made everybody else around them better. Those type of special rushers really can affect your defense. They help the guys on the back end, and if you can get a lead on people and rush the passer, you’ve got a great chance to win.”

Munchak spoke of the special player he’d love to find either in free agency or April’s draft.

“You’d like to have a guy that the offense is worried about, a guy that when there’s two minutes left can take the game over, knock the ball out of the quarterback’s hands and win it for you,” he said. “I think we’re looking for those kinds of guys, someone on the edges that can create those kinds of problems for an offense.”

Melvin Ingram from SC sounds like the defensive end we need!

Whitney Mercilus seems more of our type of player. Big, strong, and fast, and not to mention, under-the-radar. Tennessee is known for drafting players no one really knows about, or no one expects us to draft at that particular time. They find players that are not yet in their prime, but have a better ceiling than other players available i.e Michael Griffin, Jake Locker, Vince Young, Chris Johnson, Kenny Britt, Jared Cook Jr, Akeem Ayers, etc. The list goes on. They can flat out produce big time performers, only problem is, they usually don’t bring in the big time help via Free Agency, much like Pittsburgh. The Draft and Training Camp is where our mark is made. Ingram, Coples, and maybe even Nick Perry will be gone by the 20th pick rolls around. I think Mercilus from Illinois is the pick here.

I say we need to try and sign robert mathis away from the colts to a 3 year deal to have a veteran that can teach and the young players can learn from. I believe if available bring in Alshon Jeffery at wideout with the 20th pick…imagine him opposite a healthy kenny britt with jared cook and cj2k and jake locker! thats a scray offense for years to come. Then in the 2nd and 3rd we are always good at finding hidden talents so build your o line and d line in the 2,3,4 rounds! 9-7 last year im thinkin deep playoff run this year with the right additions and not letting to many people go.

upshaw from alabama. he will have qb’s and rb’s pissing themselves before every snap. titans should trade up if they need to. regardless of the draft, dave ball should be re-signed .

Please sign a free agent and stop depending on draft choices to do the heavy lifting.DEFENCE DEFENCE DEFENCE!

Im sorry Justin, but there is o chance we get Mathis. The Titans just dont sign high priced free agents. They leave that to the big boys like thePatriots and Ravens.

We need to sign Mario Williams.

titans are talking about beefing up the d line because because the secondary will be crap this year ( except for verner- he’s the real deal ). just like always titans will not do anything in the draft or free agency and will only win 7 games this year. they will replace hasselbeck with locker after week 5 and we’ll get to look forward to an aging cj2k and a kenny britt arrest in 2013. gotta love them titans!

I think the titans should break the cycle of drafting under the radar players.this is the Mike Munchak era not the Jeff Fisher era and they should go get at least 1 or 2 experienced vets and spend a little money like they did on CJ2K.This no name defense is killing our rush defense, and they signed Barrett Ruud and the mlb Colin Mcrath basically performed better than him…

  10. By titans fan feezy on Mar 1, 2012 | Reply

its Colin McCarthy and yes he out played Barret Ruud. The titans just need a veteran help like what they got in Jason Jones and Dave Ball. Re-sign these guys then draft a D.E.. Like a Melvin Ingram. Coples disappointed me at the combine and i don’t see wasting a first round pick on him. Try and get Tyvon Branch off free agency and re-sign Babineaux for our safties mayb even let Tommie Campbell try out at the safety position. Tag Mr. Finnegan if can’t reach a new deal with him. We most definitely need him in our secondary. He has that aggressive attitude our defense was once known for. We get back to our aggressive defense we can go a long ways.

We def need a veteran defensive lineman…i think if we look in the draft for that, we should def try to get Poe from Memphis! he dominated the combine and he would def clog that inside up! linebacker postion i think is pretty good and young which is even better and yea McCarthy did outplay Ruud but Ruud is a good vet player to have, so props to him! PLEASE RESIGN COURTLAND!!!! We def need him back!!! As far as offense, how about Stephen Hill from GT??? I kinda feel like the wide receiver draft class this year isnt really big SO would you rather get a d lineman from the draft and get a vet wideout (Wallace, Jackson) from free agency OR draft a wideout and get a vet d lineman from free agency???

There is going to be two great DE in Free Agency Mathis Abraham.ITS TIME TO FINALLY SPEND SOME $MONEY$ GO GET ONE. Sign FINNEGAN,BALL,JONES back. use the draft to upgrade ROLB and safety. We could also use a big back to help CJ. You know someone who on 3rd and 3 the defense has to wonder are they gonna run it up the middle. Thats helps aginst the pass rush just think play action to kenny britt.(TOUCHDOWN). TITANS ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPERBOWL NEXT SEASON.

  13. By b dev on Mar 4, 2012 | Reply

yes the titans should try to find a big back like lagarrette blount. oh wait they him and cut him in training camp two years ago. thanks again mr. fisher. let’s get derrick mason back for a farewell tour. any chance the front office sacks up and goes after a blue chip in the draft instead of dumpster diving like they were on the tv show american pickers

Well we can all tell who the true Titans fans are and who are not by some of these post but hey we all view things differently though. I think we should make a hard push for Mario Williams they are talking about a playmaker and there aren’t any better out there than him,if healthy from injury, and with him and Morgan opposite each other would be solid. I would like to see them with the 20th pick go for the safety from Bama he has the potential to be a solid and great player! But now we go with the big change coming for the Titans this year with losing Finnegan, as much as I liked watching him play the game the way he does but do not think he is a 10 mill a year shutdown CB so I agree with this move, I think we will be fine with McCourty and Verner back there, both show the potential to be a top CB tandem in the league. Our linebacker group looks very promising but they do need to add some depth in that area also as they do D-line, and O-line. So I expect a great year, as long as no major injuries like the one to Britt this past year, for the Titans!

Sign Mario Williams!! We need a veteran. Every year we lose veterans that we cannot afford to lose. We had Vanden bosch and Babin a we squandered them away. Get Mario and resign Jason Jones. Why in the world are they nor resigning Finnegan?? Reinfeldt is an ego-maniac who can just let things go!

Glad to see Griffin back, Titans should try too pursue Mario Williams,Laron Landry or Carl Nicks..to get one of those three all-pro players would be huge for any area of need, they can go from there in the draft…David DeCastro,Nick Perry, Whitney Mercilus have to make the most sense with the 20th pck…If they dont get a Safety in the draft would love to see them get Harrison Smith out of Notre Dame in rd 2 or 3 he had an amazing combine and is undervalued

  19. By layne28 on Mar 7, 2012 | Reply

We should of put the tag on Finnegan, glad to see Griffin back but i think the draft has more of a selection at safety with the 20th pick. But now i think we go get the DT from memphis poe with casey our run defense would be top notch. But we need to get a pass rushing DE in free agency. Or just get mario williams and go to a 3-4 with casey and poe. (Just spitballing)

I thank they need to get rid of Matt Hasselbeck. But they keep players that noone wants the SEAHAWKS didnt want Hasselbeck nor no other team but the TITANS pick him up.I know he had great years for the SEAHAWKS but that has past.Give the rookie QB a chance this year. But at running back let Chris Johnson have the ball.I just hope he have a better year. And at WR they have KENNY BRITT that is good and Nate Washington that has his best years as a TITAN but there are nobody after that and if they get hurt they are f—. OL are good but are getting older. And know the defense line they need help. I would get a good draft pick and a good free agent. But get someone that is good not someone that no one wants.I thank there LB is good. But there DB is where there are hurting at I thank they better pick up some good players or they be hurting this season.I hope not but will see.GO TITANS

lets sign mario i think we all agree there.then draft a big d linemen.what i really think we should do is trade up get blackman.now doesnt britt one side and blackman on the other side wow we be dangerious…remeber people its the nfl defense is nice to have ..but this is a offense drivin league now.so you dont got a high power offense you dont got nothing

We need to Mathis…i wish peppers was on the Titans :-)

  24. By layne28 on Mar 8, 2012 | Reply

No an offensive driven league means you need a great defense. Mario and Finnegan will go a long ways to help us. They are both great aginst the pass. Word is Mathis is prob. going to stay, but Abraham is also out there.

Mario Williams would be a great addition, but very expensive. It would be nice if we could afford him, and I’d also like to see Carl Nicks and Robert Meachem in a Titans jersey too. Meachem would be a good insurance policy if Britt gets hurt again, as he has in all of his 3 seasons.

we need a wide reciever every other teams got a big wide reciever yea we got britt thats great and all but we need a big playmaker we cant rely on johnson after last year we should scoop up plaxico buress or robert meachem and of course start jake locker than well be the titties

There are a couple of good bengals in free agency that could help us. DE Johnathan Fanenna and DB Kelly Jennings he could step in and fill Finnegan’s place because the titans are too dumb to see he is our best DB. Check their stats look like two solid players for us to go after if Mario gets to expensive for the titans(WHICH ALL OF OUR FANS KNOW HE WILL). I agree we should look for another WR. Meachem sounds good Jerome Simpson is great and i would also see what we could get T.OWENS for Buress would give us a lift in the red zone. SIGN FINNEGAN BACK(love the way he plays). NO MATTER HOW OUR TEAM LOOK NEXT YEAR AND THE YEARS TO COME I’LL BE A TITANS FAN. GO TITANS!!!!!!!!!

  28. By b dev on Mar 11, 2012 | Reply

griffin will not be back next year. titans know he has more value than finnegan and they will get two no. 1 draft picks when he bails. harrison smith is not worth a rat turd. i watch notre dame games they have the worst defense. smith is an average player on a crap defense. and by the way i am a real titans fan. i have watched them since warren moon was qb. if i sound bitter it’s because i have to watch them nickel and dime us year after year with mediocre draft picks and empty wallet free agency. titans ownership can suck balls

With Britt healthy the offense was fine. Britt was averaging like a hundred yards a game and multiple TD’s. I’d pick up Konz at guard or center in the 1st round if possible. Never hurts to pick solid lineman. Or Fletcher Cox at DT. Warren Sapp was very impressed with that kid. Maybe move Klug to DE and see if that works. Mario Williams would be a dream come true, but the Titans won’t pay the price he’ll be asking. I like Jared Cook, I use him in Madden. But bring in Manning and Dallas Clark…?
