Croom Wants Johnson to Become “a great back” Consistently

Posted by Gary Glenn on February 11, 2013 – 6:18 pm

Chris JohnsonSylvester Croom has only been on the job for a few weeks, but the new Titans running backs coach is already looking at ways to make Chris Johnson a more consistent player.

Croom said he’s been analyzing Johnson’s film and looks forward to meeting with him when he returns to Nashville later this offseason.

“A lot of it comes from making sure we’re doing the things that suit his abilities,” Croom told the Midday 180 on Nashville’s 104.5 The Zone. “There are times to me when he plays great, but what we have to do is get him to be a great back consistently.

“I’m sure when he looks at the film when he gets back and starts reviewing himself — he and I will both sit down together — I want to see where he thinks he needs to improve first. I have an idea, but I always like to see where the player feels he needs to improve. Once he recognizes where he needs to improve it makes it a lot easier (on both of us) to help him improve.”

Croom doesn’t believe many adjustments need to be made, but feels there are things he can assist Johnson with to help him become “a great player at all times.”One thing Croom feels would help Johnson is another player to help ease the three-time Pro Bowler’s load. Croom said to be serious about running the football, teams need two running backs throughout the course of a 16-game season.

“You’ve got to assume there’s going to be some nicks and if you’re going to really run the football — and I’m talking about 30-plus times a game — there are not many guys that can do that for 16 games anymore. The body just won’t take it — the physicality of this game and still be able to practice the next week,” Croom said.

That wouldn’t diminish Johnson’s value, Croom insisted.

“He’s the guy and we expect him to be a great player,” he said. “But I definitely think we need a guy, maybe someone with a little different style that can help us in certain situations because at the end of the day we still want Chris to be Chris Johnson. We want him to be that explosive guy who can carry the football to the end zone any time he touches it on a pass or run — anywhere on the football field. But we will need a guy that can do some other things in a different kind of a role in a game. If Chris needs a day off or needs some time off during a game, we don’t want to have a drop-off.”
