Would Titans Benefit by Having Complement Power Back?

Posted by Gary Glenn on February 28, 2013 – 10:49 am

Chris Johnson, LenDale WhiteWould the Titans’ offense be more effective with a power running back to complement Chris Johnson?

That was one of the team’s hot topics at the scouting combine last week in Indianapolis.

GM Ruston Webster said it’s something the Titans will look at.

“Maybe a situational-type guy that can come in during certain situations and close the game, short-yardage or just give us a change of pace, something different,” Webster said.

Head coach Mike Munchak took it a step further during an interview with Mike Florio on NBC Sports Network.

“I think we’re going to have to add a different type of runner there,” Munchak said. “We had our most success, I think, when Chris first came into the league with LenDale White. We need a downhill guy, a heavy guy.”

Johnson rushed for 1,228 yards (4.9 avg.) and nine touchdowns his rookie season, while White added 773 yards and 15 touchdowns in a more physical role.

Munchak said Javon Ringer is a good zone runner and supplied that role but hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Plus, Ringer is scheduled to become a free agent.

“CJ’s never been injured. He hasn’t missed a game. He doesn’t miss practice. He’s special that way, but we don’t want to overuse him,” Munchak said. “We have to use him a little bit better maybe catching some more balls out of the backfield, maybe more on screens. He’ll get as many touches, but maybe do it in different ways and allow someone else to come in there, get a little downhill and help us create an identity that way.”

It worked well with LenDale White despite the fact that White was a bum, so I say yes, my Titans would be more effective with a 2 back system.

Absolutely, need that other look when CJ is struggling just as a change of pace. Can even help CJ get in the groove better if the defense is looking at multiple options.

DEFINETLY! WE COULD ALWAYS USE ANOTHER #34! RIGHT COACH? ALSO MEND THE BRIDGE’S AND HONOR THE GREATEST PLAYER IN TEAM HISTORY! SOMETIMES YOU NEED 3 OR 4 YARDS NOT 80. I DO LOVE THE 80 YARDERS THOUGH, CJ YOU THE MAN

We could definitely use a power back to help CJ carry the load in the run game. But any good run game has a good O Line and we should definitely start there first.

I really like what I saw out of Collin Mooney at the end of the season. He’s listed at 247lbs and was a RB in college. Looks like the perfect fit for a compliment at RB and he’s already on the roster. I don’t understand why we didn’t use him much. He seems like more of a ground pounder than any of the other backs on the roster.

How bout shonne greene from the jets…hes younger than turner and jackson a. Hits a mofo! Not too mention he had 233 against the colts who we play twice a year…i like picking him up as a free agent and getting lattimore in the third round…say all u want abt his knees but…hes frank gore 2.0…for those who dont remember frank gore blew both his knees out and was told hed never make it in the league…

I agree with Gary above…let’s give Collin Mooney a shot. He ran much better than I expected at the end of last year behind a injured/terrible offensive line. He is a dadgum bulldog and he could be that guy we put in when we’re in the redzone. CJ will never be able to pound the ball through a line. Never. It’s not his style. If not Mooney then we need to get somebody who can…maybe somebody in the draft? Maybe a FA like Turner, Jackson, etc.? I still think we should have kept LaGarrete Blount. Whoever’s decision it was to cut him needs a slap in the face.

We cut blount because he slapped a teammate in practice we wanted too keep him but after what he did in college there was no way…anyhoo…mooney looks good we could still keep him also and have a stable…i really like kendall wright but imagine if we had doug martin with that pick….the titans scouts should really listen more too the fans or vote on the pick many of us could do better than whats been done

slapping somebody won’t get you cut dumb ass he looked good in preseason too which makes you dumber than a rock for cutting someone like that he was picked up by tampa bay before the door hit him in the ass when he was cut

I really like Mooney too, but I would like to see A.Bradshaw or P.Hillis as the bruiser to compliment CJ.

Love the idea of drafting M.Lattimore too, but I don’t see the Titans going after him.

What we need is a fullback what happened to hall?? and I like the idea of Mooney as well he is a guy i like to cheer for and I think he should be given a shot as the change of pace guy or if nothing else as a backer buster for cj just like hall was in front of every great tb is almost always a great fb ask eddie george who was huge himself or LT about good ole lerenzo neal hell or anyone who ever ran behind neal. I could be wrong but in his long career im pretty sure he never failed to lead his tailback to 1000 yards. I also like the idea of marcus lattimore. Even if he is a long shot he is a quality guy who deserves a chance and we wouldn’t lose much picking him up in the third or fourth, also i think he will make a full recovery. Some reports say he is already walking with a perfect gate and evern started skipping one day just to prove he could. I love cj and i hope he continues to reach the 1000 yard mark but more so i want to see the titans win. Last year was painful, almost every sunday i was put into a depression lol. Bottom line we do need another change of pace guy.

We don’t need any of the pricier guys like Bradshaw, Jackson, or Turner. None of those guys wants to come over and get just 25% of the hand offs. I like the idea of giving Colin Mooney a shot to be the starting fullback and giving him carries while CJ is still on the field. If not him, we need to have a fb we can hand off to to we don’t have to take Chris off the field too much. I would go with someone in the draft who can be a situational guy to fill that role, and can compete with Mooney and Harper for playing time. Harper can be a great player to fill that role, but too often he forces it to the outside and defeats the purpose of his large build.
