Titans Owner: “Things are Looking Up”

Posted by Gary Glenn on March 15, 2013 – 1:52 pm

Titans, BearsTitans owner Bud Adams is excited about his team’s recent free agent additions and the direction things are headed.

GM Ruston Webster led an aggressive start to free agency that resulted in the signing of former Bills guard Andy Levitre, former 49ers tight end Delanie Walker, former Lions defensive tackle Samie Lee Hill, former Jets running back Shonn Greene and former Colts linebacker Moise Fokou.

In addition, the team corralled former Bills safety George Wilson and re-signed kicker Rob Bironas before the free agency period began.

“We want the right players, that’s the main thing. We have to get the players we know can perform and make us look like we’re a tough team to play against again,” Adams told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “[General manager] Ruston [Webster] knows how I feel about this thing now….He is getting the job done.”

Webster said Adams gave his blessing for the team to be aggressive.

“It was actually fun to set a plan and then just go to it,” Webster said. “And these were the guys we targeted.”

And that was fine with Titans’ owner.

“We may have to pay some more money, but I’m in,” Adams said. “I’m ready to go with it.”

Adams, who recently turned 90, still has aspirations of the Titans becoming a consistent playoff contender.

“I may have a heart attack if we don’t,” he joked. “I just had my 90th birthday and somebody asked me, ‘Adams, how long are you going to stay at this thing?’ I said ‘I’ve made it 90, so I might as well go to 100.’ And I’d like to get in the playoffs and see some winning football over that stretch, too.

“I am excited. I feel pretty good about these guys we’ve got now. And we have the draft coming up, too. Things are looking up.”

They have retired his number, he is in the titans/oiler h.o.f. as well as the nfl hall of fame ..what else do you want them to do? rename the team the Tennesee Earl Campbells? This article is about the future of this team.Im as big an E.C. fan as there is but Christ man he has been off this team for almost 30 years. If they honor anyone this season it should be #27 or #9.

Go Titans! Draft a DE in Mingo or Jordan. Jordan is reminiscent of Jevon Kearse during the 1999 Superbowl Titans. Imagine the pass rush!

My mock draft wishes would be: Round 1 – WR Patterson or SS Vaccaro, Round 2 – OL Jones or OL Warford, Round 3 – TE Jordan Reed or WR Da’Rick Rogers if Patterson is not selected at #10. Round 4 – CB “Honey Badger” (if he’s still available). Best available after that. I understand we get a compensatory pick in the 3rd, 5th and 7th, that 3rd could be an impact player. The draft is going to be exciting, we’ll have 4 picks inside the top 100. GO TITANS!!!!!!

Thank you mr. adams, but we need to be like this every year, stop being greedy. this is a start but we need to spend this kind of money in free agency every year, otherwise its not on the coaches to have a good team, if your 90 yrs old and dont want to spend money to get a good team. Do you want to see a superbowl winning titans before you pass? well keep the spending up.

If i was owner not only would i use all money capable every year, i would also throw my own money into the mix to get more players. specailly if i was THAT rich, money is money. superbowl is out of this world.

#frustrated titans fan # go titans #playoffs next year #still need more talent on defense

Johnny, Bud Adams can’t throw in extra money to get guys. The NFL has a strict salary cap that teams aren’t allowed to go over. We are reported to have about 7 million left currently, with some room to open some up if needed. And you also have to be careful about spending all the money you have available. You don’t want to bring in the wrong guys and have a bad locker room, and you don’t want to give yourself future cap problems. The best thing is to just weigh your needs and try to find guys who can help your team win. We seem to have a good balance going this year, and I would expect us to stay mostly quiet until the draft is over. Then we will reassess the roster and likely bring in some extra competition. Don’t forget as well that we have enough space to be able to sign our rookies.

The Titans have finally impressed me with their off-season moves. Usually this time of year we just watch our own guys get plucked away. As far as the draft goes I would love to see this. 1st – Best Defensive player available, 2nd – Barrett Jones, 3rd – Best Defensive player available, 4th – Honey Badger, 5th – The TE from RICE, and whoever after that.
