There were hits, but the misses loomed larger for the Titans in the first half of their second preseason game on Saturday.
Missed tackles by Tennessee helped Cincinnati score two touchdowns, and the Titans missed three field goals in the first half to trail 17-3 at intermission.
Tennessee allowed Cincinnati QB Andy Dalton to convert a third-and-10 with a short pass that resulted in a 24-yard gain by Mohamed Sanu that set up a 1-yard TD plunge a play later by rookie Giovani Bernard. Sanu caught the ball five yards short of the first down but broke a tackle by Bernard Pollard.
The Titans also allowed the Bengals to convert third-and-8 on a pass from Dalton to Marvin Jones that gained 22 yards despite contact occurring shy of the first-down mark and third-and-5 on Cincinnati’s following possession that ended with a two-yard TD pass from Dalton to Sanu.
Three of the Titans’ first-half possessions ended with missed field goals of 38 and 37 yards by Rob Bironas, who was in his first action of 2013 and kicked a 44-yard field goal to cap Tennessee’s first possession, and a miss from 47 by Maikon Bonani.
Additionally, Akeem Ayers, who suffered an ankle injury, and Kendall Wright, who suffered a knee injury, left the field via cart on separate occasions in the first half.
