Falcons running back Stephen Jackson rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries, including a long of 13, against the Titans Saturday night, but got too many yards on early down plays, Casey believes.
“You want to get to the quarterback as much as possible, but in order to get to the quarterback, you have to stop them on first and second downs. That makes the game much easier,” Casey said.
“We’ve still got a lot to work on,” Casey added. “He (Jackson) was still out there carrying that rock. No matter what we’ve still got to keep on getting better. We are never going to be happy until we reach our goals in stopping the run. And stopping the run is not giving up anything.”
Casey continued his strong preseason Saturday night, leading the team with 1.5 QB sacks and finishing second with five total tackles as Tennessee’s defense registered six sacks, including five against Falcons starter Matt Ryan.
It marked the second consecutive week the third-year veteran’s presence was felt in a big way. At Cincinnati, he recorded a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery.
“We’ve been working hard in practice on trying to get to the quarterback,” Casey said. “We’ve all got goals to break records this year. In order to get that done, we’ve got to all help each other out. We all have been working as a unit. It’s great when you have everybody around you to make things much easier.”
