Jurrell Casey Closing in on 10 Sacks

Posted by Gary Glenn on December 5, 2013 – 12:41 pm

Jurrell CaseyOn Wednesday, Dec. 4, Titans defensive tackle Jurrell Casey was awarded an additional sack by the Elias Sports Bureau from the team’s game at Indianapolis on Dec. 1. The sack was initially credited to defensive end Derrick Morgan.

The added sack brought Casey’s game total to two sacks and his season total to nine sacks. With four games remaining in 2013, he has an opportunity to put himself in even more elite company with every quarterback takedown.

Already Casey’s nine sacks are tied for the second-most by a Titans/Oilers defensive tackle since sacks became an official statistic in 1982. The only defensive tackle with more for the team since that time was Ray Childress, who dropped the quarterback 13 times in 1992. Childress followed with nine sacks in 1992.

Casey also is one sack away from becoming the seventh defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense or 3-4 nose tackle in the last 10 years (2004–present) with double-digit sacks. In that time period, Cincinnati’s Geno Atkins recorded the high in the group with 12.5 sacks in 2012.

Casey was drafted by the Titans in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. The University of Southern California product had 2.5 sacks as a rookie and followed with three sacks in 2012.

Most sacks by 4-3 defensive tackles or 3-4 nose tackles in the last 10 seasons (2004-13):

12.5 – Geno Atkins (Cincinnati) – 2012
11.5 – Rod Coleman * (Atlanta) – 2004
11.5 – Kevin Williams (Minnesota) – 2004
10.5 – Rod Coleman * (Atlanta) – 2005
10.0 – Warren Sapp (Oakland) – 2006
10.0 – Ndamukong Suh (Detroit) – 2010
9.0 – Jurrell Casey (Tennessee) – 2013 (4 games remaining)
9.0 – Darnell Dockett (Arizona) – 2007
9.0 – Jason Hatcher (Dallas) – 2013 (4 games remaining)
8.5 – Rocky Bernard (Seattle) – 2005
8.5 – Albert Haynesworth (Tennessee) – 2008
8.5 – Kevin Williams (Minnesota) – 2008

* Coleman was a 3-4 nose tackle; all others 4-3 defensive tackles

Note: The table does not include 3-4 defensive ends. Also not included are defensive tackles on 3-4 lines which list two defensive tackles, a nose tackle and no ends (i.e. a line with a left defensive tackle, nose tackle and right defensive tackle).
