Kern on Pace to Shatter Franchise Net Punting Average

Posted by Gary Glenn on November 29, 2012 – 4:17 pm

Not only is Brett Kern making a strong case for the Pro Bowl this season, he is on pace to shatter his own record for highest single-season net punting average in franchise history.

Kern, who this season has turned in four of the franchise’s top 13 single-game net punting performances, is on pace to break last year’s net average mark of 39.4 yards by nearly three yards with his current record-setting net average of 42.3 yards.

Last week against the Jaguars, Kern set a career high with a net punting average of 49.0 yards, which also was the franchise’s third-best net punting performance in a game since 1976 (minimum four punts).

Among all NFL punters in 2012, Kern’s net average ranks third behind only New Orleans’ Thomas Morstead (45.5) and Denver’s Britton Colquitt (43.1).

Kern off to Pro Bowl Start

Posted by Gary Glenn on September 20, 2012 – 10:09 am

Brett Kern is off to a Pro Bowl start, leading the NFL in net punting average (47.5 avg.), nearly two yards ahead of Denver’s Britton Colquitt (45.7 avg), who ranks second.

So far this season Kern has recorded two of the franchise’s top 11 net punting performances. His 45.5-yard net average against New England tied for eighth (now ninth) in franchise history, and he followed that
with a 48.6-yard net average the following week at San Diego to rank third in franchise history.

Kern’s net average at San Diego set a new career high, more than two yards better than his previous high of 46.5 net yards at Seattle on Jan. 3, 2010.

The effort against the Chargers trailed only a pair of games in franchise history by Greg Montgomery, who posted a 49.8 net average against San Diego (9/19/93) and 49.4 net mark against Buffalo (12/27/92).

Over his last seven games dating back to Dec. 4, 2011 at Buffalo, Kern has produced four of the team’s all-time top 11 net punting games.
