Avery Grateful for Opportunity With Titans

Posted by Gary Glenn on September 28, 2011 – 6:49 pm

It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours for new Titans wide receiver Donnie Avery. He worked out for the Carolina Panthers yesterday, then found out the Titans wanted to bring him to Nashville for a workout. He woke up this morning and flew to Tennessee for a trial run in front of Titans coaches and personnel staff at Baptist Sports Park. Both sides liked what they saw, and by mid afternoon, Avery was on the field practicing with his new teammates.

Avery appears serious about taking advantage of this opportunity. He should after a torn ACL in an exhibition game last season against New England put his career in doubt. The second-round pick in 2008 by the St. Louis Rams had totaled 100 receptions for 1,263 yards and eight touchdowns his first two years in the NFL.

Head coach Mike Munchak said the Titans worked out “quite a few guys” and felt Avery gave them the best chance to help them this year. How Avery progresses in practice over the next few days could determine whether he is active Sunday at Cleveland.

“I know more than half of the offense we put in today, so that’s a plus,” Avery said after practice. “It’s just a matter of fine-tuning it and then getting out there on Sunday.”

Avery said he was impressed with Titans QB Matt Hasselbeck.

“He has great velocity on the ball, great touch and that’s what a receiver wants,” he said.

Avery is grateful for another opportunity in the NFL. After working his way back from a severe injury, he won’t approach this second chance lightly.

“Don’t take football for granted because it can go like that and your dream can be over,” he said. “I didn’t have patience before my surgery, but in order to get back to where you want to go, you have to be patient and work hard for it.”

As for his knee, Avery said everything feels good and he has reclaimed his speed post-surgery, clocking a 4.25 and 4.27 in the 40 while training this past summer in Houston.
