Block Party: Titans Among Best Over Last Decade

This just in from our media relations department:
Last week against the Colts, the Titans notched their second blocked punt of the season when Patrick Bailey stepped in front of a Pat McAfee punt attempt. Jason McCourty recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Two games earlier at Pittsburgh, Tim Shaw blocked a punt for the Titans.
The two blocked punts in the team’s first seven games of 2011 tied the team record for punt blocks in a season (1973, 1962, 1972 & 1999).
Under special teams coach Alan Lowry, who moved into his current position in 1999, the Titans have fielded one of the NFL’s best punt-blocking units. The team’s 10 total blocks in that time period is tied for second in the NFL behind only the Oakland Raiders.
Here’s a list of the most blocked punts since 1999 when Alan Lowry took over as special teams coach for the Titans.
